Ages 5 to 7
A first hip hop class
Hip hop first steps is for dancers who have never taken a class, or who have only danced in the living room. We count the beat out loud, learn one groove, and finish with a combination short enough to remember the next day.
Ages 5 to 7
Forty-five minutes, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays
Classes of up to 8
Taught by Alecia Batres

What a class is like
- 01
Step 1: Warm-up in a circle
We shake out arms and legs to music and learn one another's names, which is how every class begins.
- 02
Step 2: Find the beat
Clapping, bouncing and counting to eight until the whole room is on the same beat.
- 03
Step 3: One groove
A single basic move, shown slowly, then at the speed of the music.
- 04
Step 4: A short combination
Four counts of eight, put together from the grooves of the day, and a cool-down to finish.

What to wear
Clothes that move, and clean sneakers that stay in the studio. Socks are fine for the first weeks.
How long, how many
A class is forty-five minutes, with up to 8 dancers and one teacher.
Where grown-ups wait
In the lobby, which has a window onto Studio A. The teacher hands each dancer back at the door.
